The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo state has picked Mr. Kunle Adeyemo, a younger brother of late Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Micheal Adeyemo as the candidate of the party in the June 2, 2018 bye-election in Ibarapa East State Constituency.
The seat became vacant after the death of the Lanlate born lawyer turned politician who died on Friday, 27th April 2018 at the age of 47.
APC leaders in the state constituency reached an agreement to allow Kunle complete the tenure of his late brother for them to zone the seat to Eruwa, another town in the constituency in the 2019 general elections.
Similarly, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) also at the weekend conducted its primary to fill the vacant Ibarapa East State Constituency seat.
Three aspirants jostled for the ticket under the PDP.
The aspirants include Adebisi Kehinde, Esuola Saka and Debo Ogundoyin, one of the sons of the late foremost philanthropist and industrialist, Chief Adeseun Ogundoyin.
It was gathered that before the commencement of the voting, Mr Esuola Saka stepped down, leaving Adebisi Kehinde and Debo Ogundoyin in the race.
At the end of the voting, Kehinde polled 2 votes while Ogundoyin scord 37 votes to emerge winner of the shadow election.
The 31-years-old Ogundoyin was thereafter declared winner of the primary election having scored the highest votes.
Chairman of the electoral panel, Chief Okey M. Aboh in his remarks thanked delegates for their orderliness and also advised the PDP flagbearers, to work closely with his co-contestants and leadership of the party in the area to achieve victory at the bye election.
Present at the primary election include State Chairman of the party, Alhaji Kunmi Mustapha, Deputy Chairman, Olukunle James, State Secretary, Alhaji Wasiu Emiola, State Youth Leader, Asiwaju Adekola Adeoye, State Legal Adviser, Bar Koyejo Oyetunde, State Organizing Secretary, Hon Y. A. Yusuf, State Financial Secretary, Hon Abiodun Ekolo and Publicity Secretary, Engineer Akeem Olatunji.
Former Secretary to the State Government and PDP governorship aspirant in 2019 elections, Barrister Sarafadeen Abiodun Alli while reacting to emergence of the PDP candidate described the primary held in a rancor free atmosphere as a signal to tell the people that the party has learnt its lessons and has embraced internal democracy.
Alli said, “This is a good signal to tell the people that the party has fully embraced internal democracy and a sign of good things to come for the state”.
“The conduct of the aspirants and the attitude of the multitude of the people is a conclusion that everybody is eager to embrace the PDP in the coming elections.
He, howeve,r congratulated Ogundoyin and urged him to extend his hands of sportsmanship to his co-contestants.
“I urge him to see his victory as the success of a test case for a newly branded PDP not only in Oyo State but in Nigeria as a whole and should also humble himself to co-contestants so that they all can work together for the success of the party at the polls”.
